The Do’s and Dont’s of Social Media

Besides privacy laws, there aren’t too many written rules of social media. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t unwritten ones you should follow. In order to make the most of your online communities and content marketing, make sure you follow the do’s and don’ts of social media.

Do Stay Engaged

If you have business profiles on social media, make sure you’re checking them often for comments, messages, and timely content to share and reply to. Customers often use social media as a forum to contact a business, so make sure you’re actively responding to feedback and questions.

Don’t Be Rude

If a customer leaves you a bad review on Facebook, don’t attack them and reply in a rude way. Instead, craft a response that lets them know you acknowledge their concern and are sorry they weren’t pleased with your product or service, and are actively working to improve for future occasions.

Do Post Regularly

Having a set schedule of what you’ll post and how often helps show that your business is active on your social media profiles and helps avoid any large gaps in between posts.

Don’t Post for the Sake of Posting

As a business, each post you craft for social media should have a purpose and relate to your brand. While it’s fine to share something timely once in a while, you shouldn’t be posting random content that has no relation to your business — it can look a bit silly.

Do Change Your Content for Different Platforms

Not all content will perform the same. While polls can be very engaging on Twitter, the same thing may not be true for Facebook. See what content works best on each platform and post accordingly. That way, you’re engaging with your audience the best way you can.

Don’t Overuse Hashtags

If you’re going to use hashtags, make sure they’re related to your business and not overused. While one or two relevant hashtags on a tweet or Instagram photo could help the post gain traction, using 12 overused hashtags on a Facebook post will likely have little positive effect on the post and only make your caption look busy and cluttered.
